Sale 2nd XI made a winning start to the 2003 season on Saturday. Visitors Oulton Park won the toss and asked Sale to bat first. New skipper Howard Briggs made a confident start, adding 50 for the first wicket with Malik. When he fell for 33, Watterson (19) continued the momentum. Malik was then joined by veteran Whitelegg, together they pushed the score past 150. The fall of Malik for 67 lead to a mini collapse seeing 3 quick wickets fall. Mohammed (16 not out) steadied the ship, allowing Whitelegg to push the score onto a very challenging 220, finishing the innings unbeaten on 73. Wilgose bowled throughout for Oulton Park, finishing with figures of 4-94.
Almond opened the bowling with a match ball provided by Rob Moore and immediately started making inroads taking 3 quick wickets. Partner O'Donnell then got in on the act bowling Murray without offering a shot. Moore took the second of his 3 stunning catches off Almond to reduce the visitors to 30-5. He then came onto bowl and broke the stubborn partnership between Torlop (32) and Murray (9), finishing with figures of 3-35. Wilgose (30) produced a valiant rear-guard action, pushing the score up to 99. Almond then returned to pick up the final two wickets and seal a convincing win for Sale, finishing with excellent figures of 11.1-6-19-6.
