Sale 2nd XI recent poor run of form continued as they lost out to Bredbury St. Marks in the final over of their match at Clarendon Crescent on Saturday.
With the sun beating down Sale won the toss and elected to bat, this decision seemed to be paying off as Briggs and Watterson set about the Bredbury bowlers in determined fashion. Together they brought up the Sale 50 within the first 10 overs.
The introduction of spinners Foley & Broadhurst pegged back the Sale scoring rate as first Watterson (18) and then Briggs (50) fell.
Jon Scott playing his first game of the season played patiently as his partners came and went meaning that the Sale scoring rate fell dramatically. However the arrival of O'Donnell picked up the momentum again as his 22 in a 60 run partnership with Scott pushed the Sale score past 150.
Sale declared at 189-6 after 50 overs, Scott finishing unbeaten on 65. This score looked 20 runs short of par, and so it proved as Rippon (59) looked to play his shots from the start. The Sale bowlers stuck to their task, but despite breakthroughs from O'Donnell & Watterson, Bredbury put together valuable middle order partnerships in contrast to the home side.
A late wicket from Moore forced the game into the final over, but Sands (42 not out) held his nerve to secure a deserved victory for Bredbury with two balls to go.
