Sale Winning Draw
Sale 1st XI were frustrated on Saturday as Davenham batted out for a draw to deny a victory that would have moved the Vivio Cheshire County Cricket League division one leaders one step closer to promotion.   On Sunday the Sale Silverbacks won their semi-final before rain caused the abandonment of the County Over 40’s final.
Search sponsored Sale 1st XI were asked to bat first and were soon in trouble as tight bowling from Davenham reduced them to 30-3 in the 11th over.
Captain Chris Canning once again led the rebuilding efforts, falling for 29 as the home side reached 66-5 at drinks.
Rob Greenhough anchored the second half of the inning with 34 as Sale’s strong lower order ensured that they set a target to bowl at.  Ali Barrowman, Ben Watkin and Rick Halkon all made double figures as Sale posted a below par 148-9.  Robin Taylor and Ben Gough finished with 3 wickets each.
Davenham’s openers made a solid start adding 25, before pressure from the Sale bowlers and fielders reduced them to 59-5 at drinks.
At 85-6 with 15 overs to go Davenham were still in the hunt for a win, but as soon as overseas Tim Niemand was run out by Jon Hall for 14 the visitors started to shut up shop for a draw.
Sale took 3 further wickets before the final pair batted out 7 overs to hold on for the draw and leave Sale with 11 points comparted with 25 if the final wicket had fallen.  Halkon and Barrowman took 3 wickets each.
Second placed Timperley could only manage a losing draw and third placed Oulton Park lost meaning Sale increased their cushion by 4 points at the top of the table.
Over 40’s North East Champions Sale Silverbacks faced Chester Boughton Hall Blazers in the county semi-final at Timperley on Sunday.
Chester got off to a steady start after being asked to bat first by captain Mark Rowe with openers Phil Thomas (30 retired) and Alex Barr (18) putting on 36 for the first wicket in 5 overs before Barr was bowled by Ian Holland.
The introduction of Mark Almond (1-17) and Soans Praveen (0-18) slowed the run rate with only Steadman and Bennett getting into double figures, helped by 0-14 off Howard Briggs’ 4 over spell and a late burst from opening quickie Paul Hanrahan (2-16) left Chester’s innings a little short of where they would have liked at 111-5.
In reply the Silverbacks lost Hanrahan for 1 with the score on 16, but steady innings from Rowe (30 retired), Almond (10), Paul Battersby (15) and Praveen (14) got the Silverbacks within striking distance needing 26 from the last 3 overs.
When Carl Hicks (pictured below by George Franks) pulled his first and third deliveries behind square for 4 the pressure was released as together with Briggs they saw the Silverbacks home with a ball to spare, winning by 5 wickets.

After rain curtailed the final after just 3 overs Sale won the toss for home advantage where the final will be replayed on bank holiday Monday, 2pm start.
The 2nd XI didn’t travel to the Wirral on Saturday as their game at Upton was cancelled due to heavy overnight rain.
On Saturday the 1st XI host Urmston and the 2nd XI make the short trip to Bowdon.  On Sunday the 3rd XI travel to Didsbury 4th.
